Place De Brouckère and part of Boulevard Anspach were closed in Brussels due to strong winds causing signs to fall, security measures are underway.
Place De Brouckère and part of Boulevard Anspach were closed on Monday as a security measure as violent winds blew across part of Belgium, Brussels police said.
Wooden panels fell from a construction site at Place De Brouckère onto the public highway and other panels threaten to fall as well. The police therefore set up a security perimeter at the request of the firefighters.
Gusts of between 80 and 95 kilometers/hour, or locally a little more, as well as showers are expected Monday afternoon, according to midday forecasts from the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM).
The Federal Public Service (FPS) Interior activated the number 1722 for risk of storm or flood while the IRM issued a wind alert until 6:00 p.m. and a rain alert until 7:00 p.m.
Citizens are invited to dial the number 1722 dedicated to non-urgent interventions by firefighters in the event of damage caused by the storm or water damage.
In addition to this special number, the public service recommends that the population submit a request for assistance via the electronic counter (1722.be), the latter being “the most direct way to request help from firefighters in situations where no lives are in danger.”
The number 112 should only be used in cases of emergency, insists the FPS Interior.
