Canada must demonstrate “stability and strength” in the face of Donald Trump coming to power in the United States, says Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford, who urges Justin Trudeau to “continue to do his job” until to the choice of his successor.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that he will resign from his post following the selection of a new Liberal leader. Meanwhile, Parliament is prorogued until March 24.
However, Mr. Ford emphasizes that President-elect Donald Trump will take power in two weeks.
For him, the imposition of American customs tariffs must be avoided at all costs.
Prorogation does not mean vacation [pour Justin Trudeau]
says the Ontario premier.
President-elect Trump continues to make real threats regarding the imposition of widespread tariffs that would be devastating to the Canadian economy.
If these tariffs are indeed imposed on Canadian products, it would be a major failure on the part of the federal government
according to Mr. Ford. The federal government must urgently explain to Canadians how it intends to avoid these tariffs
he writes.
The Ontario Prime Minister is once again pressing Ottawa to invest more in the border and in the armed forces, to appease Mr. Trump. The plan [du fédéral pour la frontière] is good, but concrete measures are needed
he added.
Leave politics aside, says Doug Ford
More than ever, the interests of Canadian workers and families must take precedence over political or partisan ambitions
adds Mr. Ford in his written statement.
For him, Canada should respond firmly if Donald Trump moves forward with his threat of customs tariffs. We have a list of things Ontario could do
says Prime Minister Ford, who has already threatened to cut electricity exports to the United States.
The Prime Minister of Ontario does not mention Justin Trudeau’s name at all in his press release. He also does not comment on the years of public service of his federal counterpart.
In a press briefing, Mr. Ford, however, highlighted the collaboration between his government and that of Mr. Trudeau during the pandemic and in the industrial sector. I don’t care about political colors
he said.
