Mali: An audio attributed to Amadou Kouffa announces the death of Caliph Thierno Amadou Hady Tall

Mali is in turmoil after the broadcast of an audio recording attributed to Amadou Kouffa, leader of Katiba Macina, a faction affiliated with the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM) announcing the death of Thierno Amadou Hady Tall, Caliph General of the Omarian Brotherhood, kidnapped on December 26, 2024.

An ambiguous and worrying statement

The audio, whose recording date remains unknown, has plunged Mali into concern. Although no official confirmation has been made, the audio reinforces the hypothesis of a death. “He had not arrived at his destination,” according to the audiovisual media, suggesting that the Caliph would have died in captivity. The lack of details and tangible evidence accentuates the uncertainty surrounding this statement.

Thierno Amadou Hady Tall was kidnapped under still unclear conditions, in a context marked by increasing violence in Mali. The voice attributed to Amadou Kouffa justifies this act by accusing the religious guide of collusion with the Malian armed forces and their allies, in particular the Wagner group, whom he describes as “Taghut” (tyrants). The Caliph is accused of having supported reprisals against Muslims suspected of being linked to jihadist groups, without providing evidence.

The audio lent to the leader of the Katiba Macina faction also mentions the holding of an “Islamic court” to judge Thierno Tall. This detail raises many questions about the nature and objectives of this procedure. There is no clear information to determine whether the Caliph survived this episode, and the mention of the court fuels fears about his fate.

Meanwhile, the Nioro region of the Sahel, considered the bastion of the Omarian brotherhood, is plunged into deep instability. This situation is exacerbated by the rise in power of armed jihadist groups, which are upsetting local balances and weakening traditional relationships between populations and their religious authorities.
