Lecornu judges Mélenchon “irresponsible” for his comments after French strikes against IS

Between Sébastien Lecornu and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the year 2025 began with a battle of arms. The Minister of the Armed Forces on Wednesday described as “irresponsible” a comment by the rebellious leader affirming that “ is bombing in Syria”, after French strikes against the Islamic State (IS) group.

Sébastien Lecornu announced Tuesday on X “targeted strikes against Daesh sites” on Syrian soil, as part of the international anti-jihadist coalition, the first operation of this type for France in two years. The Ministry of the Armed Forces specified that Rafale fighter jets and Reaper drones had sent seven bombs on two IS military objectives in the center of the country.

France has participated in the fight against ISIS, within the international “Inherent Resolve” coalition, since 2014 in Iraq and 2015 in Syria, through Operation Chammal. The French Parliament authorized the extension of this participation on January 13, 2015, concerning the commitment in Iraq, and on November 25, 2015 for the Syrian territory, recalled the Minister of the Armed Forces.

Our articles on Syria

The fall of Bashar Al-Assad in early December was caused by a lightning offensive by Syrian rebel forces, led by a radical Sunni group. It leads to a total recomposition of Syria and also raises fears of a resurgence of the activities of IS, which historically remained very active in Iraq and Syria, even after the end of its caliphate (2014-2019). On December 8, the day Syrian rebels took Damascus, Washington announced strikes on more than 75 IS targets.
