The festival will open on October 29 with a screening ofEmilia Perez. This musical comedy by Jacques Audiard received the Jury Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival and the collective interpretation prize for Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, as well as for the transgender lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón.

It will close on November 3 with the screening of Count of Monte Cristo. The adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, with Pierre Niney in the role of Edmond Dantès, is currently a hit in France, where it has exceeded 8 million admissions.

These two heavyweights are among the films pre-selected to represent France at the Oscars. Prevented from competing in the category “Best International Film”Justine Triet’s masterpiece had nevertheless been nominated in five categories and had won the Oscar for best screenplay. A snub for the commission, while The passion of Dodin Bouffant had not even been retained in the category “Best International Film”.

“We are very pleased to have Emilia Perez as a curtain raiser and The Count of Monte Cristo at the closing of the Festival this year”said Cécile Rap-Veber, president of the Franco-American Cultural Fund, which oversees the festival, in a statement. “The American French Film Festival has become the go-to place for French films and series at the start of awards season in Los Angeles.”
