The best golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler, will have to miss the first PGA tournament of the season and four weeks of activities due to an unusual injury.
The organizers of the Sentry, which is to be held between January 2 and 5 in Hawaii, indicated Friday that the American had withdrawn for a very specific reason.
“On Christmas Day while preparing supper, Scottie suffered a cut to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. Small fragments of glass remained in the palm, which required surgery,” Scheffler manager Blake Smith said in a statement.
The 28-year-old athlete has had quite the year in 2024 with eight victories, including a gold medal at the Olympic Games in France. He won the Masters Tournament in April and finished first in the FedEx Cup standings.
Scheffler is not the only golfer to come out of the Christmas break banged up. Norwegian Viktor Hovland shared an X-ray image on Instagram that appears to show he suffered a broken toe. An unfortunate encounter with a bed frame is believed to be the cause.
