Why will storm Boris be devastating in part of Europe? – Libération

Huge floods, even mudslides, floods or landslides are feared in central Europe this weekend of September 14 and 15, due to a strong depression which will remain stuck above the territory for several days.

Up to 400 litres of water per square metre, entire crops threatened, events cancelled in series… Several countries in Central Europe are preparing to face their worst floods in decades with the arrival of storm Boris on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September. The Slovak equivalent of Météo-France even considers this rainfall to be more significant than that which devastated Central Europe in 2013, although at the time it was considered unprecedented for hundreds of years. Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia are already on alert. Liberation takes stock of this meteorological phenomenon, in which global warming plays a role.

How did Boris Depression form and why is it so feared?

Behind Boris lies a strong depression, i.e. an area of ​​low atmospheric pressure. This meteorological phenomenon – generally synonymous with bad weather, strong winds and precipitation – is notably associated with an imposing mass of cold air at altitude, which will feed it for several days.
