On November 20, the hand of the United States representative was raised and the ax fell on yet another draft resolution to stop the carnage in Gaza. Robert Woods, the deputy American ambassador to the UN Security Council, vetoed a resolution calling for an unconditional ceasefire. Reason: the end of the fighting was not conditional on the release of the hostages held by Hamas. Once again, the persuasion efforts of Israel's main ally were in vain.

Sitting on the Security Council, the supreme body of the United Nations, the only one to hold coercive power but blocked by rivalries between the great powers, is a Sisyphean job. The body carries out less publicized essential tasks when it comes to renewing the peacekeeping missions of Blue Helmets who protect millions of civilians around the world.
