A detonation, followed by a snow slide. The scene repeats itself tirelessly on this Tuesday morning on the summits of Anzère. Dozens of avalanches are triggered preventively to secure the Valais ski area. Some charges are launched from a helicopter, others from ski patrollers, while gazex – fixed triggering devices, which use a gas mixture to cause the explosion – were used earlier in the morning. The work is more than necessary. At an altitude of 2,350 meters, at Pas de Maimbré, 1.70 meters of cumulative snow has fallen since Friday.

“We certainly have the most hostile terrain of all the ski areas in Switzerland. We do not have a slope that is not exposed to the danger of avalanches,” summarizes Sébastien Travelletti, the president of TéléAnzère. The work is therefore substantial: the 58 kilometers of slopes must be secured before skiers can slide down them. Work started on Monday already. Throughout the day and despite the bad weather, the patrollers, on skis, triggered flows.
