The Prime Minister's Office announced an adjustment to Mr. Trudeau's itinerary midday, indicating that he would participate in the meeting virtually, although no time was specified.

The past week has been chaotic for the ruling Liberals, starting with Chrystia Freeland's resignation from cabinet just hours before she was due to deliver the fall economic statement.

Mme Freeland and new Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc spoke to the media at the end of previous cabinet committee meetings.

The committee was reformed following Donald Trump's re-election, and one of the main topics of discussion at the meetings was border security after the new president threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian products.

Several Liberal MPs have publicly called on Mr. Trudeau to step down as leader of the Liberal Party since Mr.me Freeland, and the New Democratic Party (NDP) joined other main opposition parties in saying they no longer have confidence in the minority Liberal government.
