And new significant snow episodein other words a snowstorm, will fall in the Pyrenees between this Sunday December 22, 2024. This weather is expected to last until Christmas Eve.
Up to 1 meter of snow
THE snow accumulations will be important over a large part of the Pyrenean massifs. HAS 1,000 meters altitude, more than 50 cm of snow, on average, are expected as in the Luchonnais and Haute-Ariège massifs.
Higher in altitude, at 2000 meters, up to 1 meter is expected. This is the case for the Haute-Bigorre and Couserans massifs.
Wind and blizzard
Météo Pyrénées announces that the weather will start to deteriorate at the start of the afternoon this Sunday. Arrival of cold, then precipitation at low altitude… The wind coming from the north will also be there. It will strengthen very clearly, with gusts over 130 km/h in the mountains, particularly to the east of the Pyrenees, between Andorra and Capcir, Puymorens. Blizzard is expected.
The wind, still present, will be less violent to the west of the Pyrenees, but still quite strong : 80 to 100 km/h on the summits of Haute-Bigorre for example.
Roads closed
Access to Andorra by the RN20 and RN320 will not be possible this Sunday, due to snowfall and strong winds. Roads will be closed.
End of the storm on Christmas Eve
This snowy episode will continue this Monday, December 23. Snowfall will be abundant at low altitude across the entire massif, especially in the morning. In the afternoon, precipitation at the limit rain/snow are expected around 600/700m altitude between the Luchonnais and Ariège massifs.
Tuesday, December 24, the episode will continue with a few more showers, but the limit rain/snow will rise to 1,600 m.
For the Christmas daytemperatures will drop to 0 °C at 3,000 m, with thereturn of dry and sunny weather in the mountains. The risk of avalanches will be high between December 24 and 25, while the snow sets.
