69,211 cases including 1,260 deaths since the start of 2024

The number of Mpox cases in Africa has reached 69,211 with more than 1,260 deaths since the start of 2024, according to the latest figures released by the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention, based in Addis Ababa.

Of this total, 14,794 cases have been confirmed and more than 1,268 deaths have been recorded, said the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), noting that the continent reported 3,095 new cases last week. , including 553 confirmed and 31 new deaths.

The number of confirmed Mpox cases in Africa increased by more than 789% in 2024 compared to 2023, Africa CDC added.

Last August, Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency.

A six-month joint continental response plan with the WHO and with a budget of nearly $600 million had been launched.
