“If we have a vote of confidence, a vote of censure in the House of Commons, in the days to come, we can have a Prime Minister with a real mandate for the end of January,” declared Mr. Poilievre at a press briefing. Friday.
His speech shortly followed the swearing in of eight new ministers as part of the cabinet shuffle at Rideau Hall in front of Governor General Mary Simon.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Friday that his party is close to bringing down the Liberal government in the next confidence vote.
Mr. Poilievre wanted Ms. Simon to comply before the Christmas break, in order to bring down the government as soon as possible.
The Governor General is not obliged to recall the MPs to the House, an extraordinary measure which would be all the more surprising since the request comes from the leader of the official opposition and not from the Prime Minister.
Confronted on this aspect, Mr. Poilievre declared that Ms. Simon “has a responsibility to recall Parliament because the Prime Minister has lost confidence in addition to having lost control.”
Justin Trudeau carried out a major cabinet shuffle on Friday, as various media reported in recent days that the Prime Minister was toying with the idea of throwing in the towel as leader of the Liberal Party.
United States President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to take office on January 20.
