In Anderlecht, young people under the age of 16 will not be able to go out unaccompanied in the Cureghem district on New Year’s Eve. This is a preventive and not punitive measure, according to the mayor. Other Brussels municipalities could make a similar decision.
This is a first. The municipality of Anderlecht, in the Brussels region, has decided to impose a partial curfew on minors under 16 on New Year’s Eve, Bruzz reports this Thursday.
This measure applies in the Cureghem district. Young people will not be able to go out unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian from 7 p.m. The municipal authorities justify this decision with a dual objective: to avoid disturbances to public order and to protect young people. “Children should not be outside at this time. It’s for their own safety.”justifies mayor Fabrice Cumps (PS). He mentions the Cobra 8 fireworks, often used in the city and which can tear off your hand if mishandled.
This is not house arrest
Last year, 20% of the people arrested in Cureghem on the evening of December 31 were minors. After several incidents involving fireworks in the neighborhood, the municipality decided to implement this curfew. But, according to the socialist mayor, this is not a punishment. “It’s not house arrest, like in Antwerp,” underlines Fabrice Cumps.
47 young people forced to stay at home in Antwerp
Around fifty young people will be placed under preventive house arrest during the New Year’s Eve in Antwerp, indicated the mayor of the metropolis, Bart De Wever (N-VA). This preventive measure had already been taken over the last two years in the city of Antwerp.
In total, 47 people, already known to the police for multiple acts, will be affected by this measure. The police will therefore carry out checks on New Year’s Eve to check whether young people are respecting their house arrest.
Both in Antwerp and in other Belgian cities, New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest for the police and firefighters, particularly due to nuisances and incidents linked to fireworks.
Other Brussels municipalities are also considering restrictions similar to those taken in Anderlecht. The mayor of Etterbeek, Vincent De Wolf (MR), declared to Bruzz that he was also thinking of implementing preventive house arrest.
