– Report on EU enlargement: Ankara hails a “correct and realistic approach”
Ankara called the European Union (EU) enlargement report’s emphasis on candidate country status and the key role of Türkiye “a correct and realistic approach”.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday shared a written statement on the annual conclusions adopted by the EU General Affairs Council on the enlargement process.
Türkiye welcomed the resumption of high-level economic dialogue meetings and the return of the European Investment Bank to Türkiye.
“We consider that the emphasis placed on the status of Türkiye as a candidate country and on its key role in the conclusions is a correct and realistic approach,” underlined the Turkish ministry, which notably received positively the mentions on the progress in macroeconomic policies.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday.
The two presidents discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as regional and global issues, indicates the Directorate of Presidency Communication.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicated to Emmanuel Macron the importance of protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria and welcomed France’s decision to reopen its embassy in Syria.
The Turkish president mentioned the efforts made for the return of Syrian refugees to their country and stressed the need for the international community to cooperate in order to create lasting conditions allowing the Syrians to stay there and ensure the reconstruction work of Syria.

– Nicolas Sarkozy definitively sentenced to three years in prison, including one year, in the wiretapping affair
The Court of Cassation rejected, on Wednesday, the appeals of the former French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, and made definitive his conviction for corruption and influence peddling, to three years of imprisonment, one year of which is under an electronic bracelet, with three years of ineligibility, French media reported.
These sentences, so far suspended, will be applied: the former president, 69, will be summoned before a sentence enforcement judge (JAP) to have an electronic bracelet fitted, specifies the daily “Le Monde”.
The decision in this case, also called Bismuth, comes as the former tenant of the Élysée must appear from January 6, and for four months, at the Paris court, in the case of suspicion of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign, recalls the same media.

– Mayotte: France has activated the European civil protection mechanism
France activated the European civil protection mechanism to deal with the catastrophic situation left last Saturday by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte, a French overseas territory located in the Indian Ocean.

At least 25 dead in boat capsize
At least 25 people were killed in the capsizing of a boat on Tuesday in central DRC, African media reported.
The boat had more than 100 passengers on board when it left the town of Inongo, northeast of the capital Kinshasa. She capsized a few hundred meters further on the Fimi River, specifies Africanews adding that the search for the missing people continued.
“There has been an overload at the roof level and, as far as dead bodies are concerned, at least 25 have been recovered so far,” said David Kalemba, the river commissioner of Inongo quoted by the same media .
The boat that capsized was also loaded with goods, according to Alex Mbumba, a local resident. “Among the dead, there are children, but it is difficult to give an exact toll at the moment, because the boat had many passengers,” Mbumba said.

A first serious case of avian flu has been detected in a human in the United States, local health authorities announced this Wednesday, December 18.
