- Several hundred, even thousands, of deaths: the authorities fear a very heavy human toll in the poorest department in France, devastated by cyclone Chido, where relief efforts have been reinforced since Sunday by airlift.
- At the end of a meeting of the interministerial crisis unit at the resigned Ministry of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau was not able to announce a new human tollbut stated that a mission would begin a “local census” when the roads start to reopen.
- Bruno Retailleau announced the arrival “in the coming days” 400 additional gendarmes in Mayotte to lend a hand to the 1,600 gendarmes and police officers present in the archipelago. He added on Monday evening that “70% of residents [avaient] been seriously affected.
- “First twenty-five patient evacuations” were carried out Monday from Mayotte to Reunion. The resigning Minister of Health, Geneviève Darrieussecq, intends to continue actions aimed at “to deliver human and material reinforcements according to the evolution of the situation and the health needs of our Mahorese compatriots”.
- The Prime Minister, François Bayrou, called on Monday, during the Pau municipal council, for the “national solidarity”through the action of the State but also the participation of local authorities in France.
- Solidarity is organized on the ground despite degraded conditions, while a large part of the archipelago is still deprived of electricity, mobile network and Internet.
- The illegal population of Mayotte exceeds 100,000 peopleaccording to the Ministry of the Interior – out of some 320,000 officially registered inhabitants – which makes an exhaustive count of the dead improbable.
