December seventeen, 2024: time. Dakar, Raw Material Company: space. Space or place. A table. On the left, Fatou Bintou Rassoul Sy, from Raw. On the right, Marie-Hélène Pereira, from Raw. In the center, Felwine Sarr… from Raw. The place has its trees, its birds and its kind guests who populate it on this December morning. Felwine, Bintou and Hélène speak precisely of space and imagination. Mr. Sarr: “For a long time, we wanted to resemble other cities in the world, and the ideal of the city was London, , Vienna, even though we are Sahel States and our imaginations have been inhabited by a form of completed imagination which is the modern Western city.” Mr. Sarr: “Work of deconstruction, decolonization of imaginations.” How ? “Be able to produce cities that reflect our civilization and our vision of living together.” Live ? “The question of inhabiting it is also the question of using the world. And this question crosses the question of place, of how we make sense of places.” Make sense of place? “Places affect us, we affect them. They produce us and we produce them.” Who we are and who we want to be? “The way we affect places” tells us. And here, among other things, were said by Mr. Felwine Sarr, on the scene, for a little over ten minutes. Condensed and not all condensed. From December 18 to 21, development.

Four axes for a fifth edition
From December 18 to 21, the symposium entitled “A sense of place: Displacement. Replacement. Non-placement”, which will see its director, Felwine Sarr, give an inaugural conference. Development of the digest. Does “A sense of place” mean? The Raw and its guests will define and who will be at the museum Théodore Monod will know what we mean by displacement, replacement and non-placement.

Overall, the discussions will revolve around four axes: the city, the living, the intangible and the cosmopolitics of hospitality. A taste of the conference. ? Felwine: “Our cities are not just made of materials and bricks.” The city? The world! What world? Ours, in crisis. You will have to think about it. Felwine: “We are in a bordered world. We are in a world that produces deaths at the borders with a way of inhabiting the land that is tribal: each person has his own space of land, his piece of land that he defends unlike others, against all odds. And we have difficulty conceiving of ourselves as a human community (…).” This will be developed…

When developing what will be the symposium, in the discussions, the Raw teams also reflected on “the way in which, in the arts and in culture, we have developed hospital practices which are imbued with our cultures », explains Marie-Hélène Pereira. And, “this is the reason why, for example, we wanted to integrate food as a tool of thought, a tool for transmitting knowledge, a tool for welcoming others.” To Théodore Monod then, the four axes which make up edition 5 of the Condition Report of Raw Material Company will be exploited in different ways (by, of course, many thinkers, artists, etc.). We will be entitled to a multi-sensory space: “We will summon a lot of sounds, there will be a lot of books to read, there will also be a lot of audio or video content. But there is also a whole experience with artists who will be there and who will, through taste, through performative practice, convene different practices, different reflections and the different axes of this symposium.
