We don’t know what the future holds for Domenico Tedesco, but the signs are red. Even if Vincent Mannaert has calmed things down, we are of course already thinking about potential successors…
The year 2024 will end, barring any huge surprises, without any change at the head of the Red Devils. And the CEO of the Belgian Union even took advantage of a visit to a seminar at the University of Mechelen to take stock: it is possible that the decision will not even fall in January for Domenico Tedesco (read here).
But let’s not kid ourselves: if it weren’t for the financial side of things, the coach of the Red Devils would probably already have left the door the day after the defeat in Israel. Tedesco is in danger, and the fact that Mannaert is saying in public that he must “decide whether he can look forward to the future with complete peace of mind” with the German-Italian is not a good sign.
And so, in the event of departure, who will succeed Domenico Tedesco? Several names stand out. Many are hoping for a Belgian coach this time, and the names of Michel Preud’homme, Hein Vanhaezebrouck and Philippe Clément are frequently mentioned.
Another coach who knows the Belgian national team well is free to engage wherever he wishes: it is Thierry Henryformer assistant to Roberto Martinez on two occasions. The Frenchman restored his image with a successful stint at the head of the France Espoirs team, winning silver at the Paris Olympic Games.
Henry was already one of the candidates mentioned to succeed Martinez, and according to some sources was even seriously considered by the federation. If Vincent Mannaert were to separate from Domenico Tedesco, there is no doubt that he would probe the former Devils deputy, if the latter was still free by then.
At the microphone of Sky SportsThierry Henry spoke about his future with tweezers. “I will make a decision based on what seems right to me. I will evaluate the situation to see what it would be, where it would be (…) People don’t take into consideration how hard it is for a coach. To move your kids somewhere and then get fired. People don’t care what happens to you, don’t care about the coach,” he says.
“I’m open to anything and everything, but it has to be something that makes sense for me and for my family, that’s very important,” concludes Henry. The Red Devils project, which he knows well, could well correspond to these criteria…
