Smiling, she poses for her mugshot, after having beaten a two-year-old boy to death. A little more than two years after this tragedy, Makallie Durham, 25, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the murder of little Kristian Harris. She escaped the death penalty by pleading guilty, but will not be eligible for parole at any time.
The facts date back to September 13, 2022. That day, police officers and paramedics arrived at a house in Corinth (Mississippi), where they found an unconscious two-year-old child. The authorities quickly noted that the boy’s body had marks and bruises, recalls the “Daily Journal”. Her 11-month-old little sister also suffered numerous injuries. Both victims were taken to Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where Kristian died two days later. His youngest, for her part, survived.
Makallie Durham, who was the little ones’ babysitter, was arrested the day Kristian died. According to the indictment, the 25-year-old young woman put the two children through a real ordeal for four days, hitting them in the head and face several times. She finally delivered the fatal blows to the little boy on September 13.
The link between Makallie Durham and the victims’ parents is not very clear, but it seems that the young woman was very close to their mother: “How could you be my friend, my sister, my best friend?” Jay Hurd wrote shortly after his son’s death. On the day of the verdict, the latter spoke on Facebook: “No, this will not bring you back, but she will never be able to hurt anyone again,” wrote the bereaved mother.
