The Jules Bordet Institute becomes the first center in Belgium, and the 12th in the world, to integrate Comprehensive Motion Management (CMM) technology into its MRI-Linac. announced the establishment on Tuesday in a press release.
The MRI-Linac, operational since 2022 thanks to funding from the Jules Bordet Association, combines a high-field MRI (1.5 Tesla) with a radiotherapy linear accelerator. This technology, unique in Belgium, allows tumors and organs to be visualized in real time, improving the precision of treatments while limiting the exposure of healthy tissues. With the addition of CMM, the device now adapts to organ movements during sessions, a crucial asset for treating prostate, pancreatic and liver cancers.
“The radiotherapy beam automatically stops if the tumor leaves the target area, which increases the safety of the treatments,” explains Dr Robbe Van den Begin, medical manager of MRI-Linac. “This technology also allows us to adjust treatment plans in real time based on tumor movement. »
Since its introduction, more than 200 patients have benefited from MRI-guided radiotherapy. “The CMM represents much more than technical progress: it is the first step in a major medical revolution,” declares Professor Philippe Martinive, head of the radiotherapy department.
According to Akos Gulyban, project manager in medical physics, the Jules Bordet Institute played a key role in the rapid deployment of this technology. “For the first time, Elekta, the manufacturer of the MRI-Linac, combined training and clinical treatments in order to accelerate the process, a challenge successfully met thanks to the involvement of our teams,” he explains. .
This advance is part of a desire to broaden the application of this technology to other types of cancers and to improve the personalization of care. The Jules Bordet Institute, which is part of the Brussels University Hospital (HUB), thus confirms its pioneering position in oncology.
