Conservative candidate Tamara Jansen will therefore return to Ottawa as MP for the riding she represented from 2019 to 2021. This is the third seat lost by the Liberals in a by-election since the start of the election. ‘year.

Mme Jansen signed this victory for the Conservatives at the end of a particularly difficult day for the Liberals in Ottawa, where the government was shaken by the resounding resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, just hours before the presentation of the update. fall economic update.

Mme Jansen (66.3% of the vote) had the best against five other candidates, including Liberal Madison Fleischer (16.0%) and New Democrat Vanessa Sharma (12.5%). The participation rate was 16.27%, according to Elections Canada data.

Cloverdale–Langley City, in the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver, has swung between the Conservatives and Liberals in the most recent elections. Mme Jansen dethroned Liberal John Aldag in 2019, but the latter took his revenge in 2021.

Mr. Aldag resigned earlier this year to run in the provincial election in British Columbia, under the NDP banner. He was defeated by the conservative candidate.

Monday’s byelection in British Columbia represented a third test for the Trudeau government, which lost two long-held seats in byelections elsewhere in Canada earlier this year.

In September, the Liberals lost to the Bloc Québécois in the Montreal riding of LaSalle—Émard—Verdun. In June, they lost the riding of Toronto–St. Paul’s in the hands of the conservatives.

Successive defeats in by-elections, disappointing poll results and, now, the departure of Chrystia Freeland from cabinet have shaken the leadership of Justin Trudeau, who sees some people, both inside and outside his left, demand his resignation.

In a letter made public Monday, Mr.me Freeland explained that she chose to withdraw from cabinet because the prime minister had lost confidence in her. She revealed that she disagreed with some decisions that caused the deficit to explode far beyond what she had promised.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, whose caucus supported the minority Liberals in key votes in the House of Commons, called on Mr. Trudeau to resign as Liberal leader.

Mr. Singh said “all options are on the table,” but he would not say whether he was prepared to overthrow the minority government.
