Morocco projects itself as an essential destination for global tourism (Le Figaro)

As the 2030 World Cup approaches, which it will co-organize with Spain and Portugal, Morocco projects itself as an essential destination for global tourism thanks to massive investments in its airport, railway and sports infrastructure, writes the French daily “Le Figaro”.

Recalling the announcement on Monday by the head of government Aziz Akhannouch of “an ambitious plan” aimed at increasing the capacity of the Kingdom’s airports, “Le Figaro” notes that “these efforts not only meet the needs of the World Cup, but aim also to support the country’s tourism growth.

Morocco, recalls the newspaper, welcomed 15.9 million tourists over the first 11 months of 2024, “a historic record, already exceeding the annual total for 2023”, noting that in addition to airports, efforts are focused on The extension of the high-speed rail network which should serve 43 cities, or 87% of the Moroccan population, by 2040.

“Le Figaro” underlines in this context that the 2030 World Cup represents a strategic opportunity for Morocco, which will invest up to 500 million euros in the renovation and expansion of 45 stadiums and training sites.

This dynamic, notes the newspaper, “is part of a favorable sporting context, the country having also been chosen to host the African Cup of Nations in 2025, thus strengthening its positioning as a leading destination for football fans and travel”.

And added that “with these large-scale projects, Morocco is banking on sport and infrastructure to consolidate its attractiveness and its status as a crossroads between Europe and Africa.”
