The leader of the ruling party in the Republic of Korea announced his resignation on Monday following the adoption last Saturday in parliament of an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol.
SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) — The head of the Republic of Korea’s ruling party announced Monday his resignation after parliament passed an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol last Saturday.
Han Dong-hoon, head of the People’s Power Party (PPP), said in a televised press conference that he was resigning because the party’s supreme council collapsed with the resignation of its members, preventing him to fulfill his duties as party leader.
He apologized to all those who suffered from the imposition of emergency martial law, declared by Mr Yoon on the evening of December 3, but revoked by parliament hours later.
Mr Han, who had previously pushed for Yoon’s “orderly resignation”, noted that he had tried his best to find a better solution for the country, short of Yoon’s impeachment, but did not had not succeeded.
Mr. Han’s resignation comes less than five months after his election as party leader on July 23.
The second motion to impeach Mr. Yoon was passed by parliament on Saturday and was sent to the Constitutional Court to deliberate for up to 180 days, during which time Mr. Yoon’s presidential power is suspended .
In the process, the five elected members of the PPP supreme council expressed their desire to resign.
Ruling party leader Kweon Seong-dong will take over as interim party leader following Han’s resignation.
