At least thirty-nine (39) Nigerien civilians were killed in an attack carried out by armed men against two villages in the department of Téra, in western Niger and near the border with Burkina Faso, the army announced Nigerian, Saturday.
“Two atrocious tragedies occurred in the localities of Libiri and Kokorou. Criminals, cornered by the incessant operations of the Defense and Security Forces, cowardly attacked defenseless civilian populations,” reported a press release from the Forces. Nigerien Armies (FAN) broadcast Saturday evening on public television.
“The human toll is heavy and shows 39 people murdered, including 18 in Kokorou and 21 in Libiri,” lamented the same source, specifying that “among the victims, there are many women and children.”
No claims have been registered in relation to this attack, Sunday at 9 a.m. GMT.
On Thursday, December 5, another attack targeted a public transport truck in the same department of Téra.
According to a report published by the army, at least 21 civilians were killed.
On Tuesday, December 10, an army detachment was attacked by armed men still in Téra. According to an official report, ten (10) soldiers were killed and seven (07) others were injured.
The army indicated that it had neutralized at least twenty-six (26) terrorists.
Since 2017, localities in western Niger have been facing armed attacks attributed to terrorist groups operating in the “three border zone” located between Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
