This is what the future Rabat vegetable wholesale market looks like, seen from the sky

Built on an area of 25 hectares, including 15 covered, this complex required an investment of nearly 600 million dirhams. Its construction was entrusted to the company Rabat Aménagement, a public entity under the municipality of Rabat. However, the site was delayed several months due to disagreements regarding the location of the project.

This market will supply the cities of Salé, Rabat, as well as Témara and Skhirat with vegetables and fruits. For many months, the vegetable and fruit merchants of Salé expressed their opposition to the choice of the current location, located near the highway linking Rabat to Tangier and Fez, citing its distance from the urban centers concerned.

Designed according to the standards of new generation markets, that of the Rabat region is distinguished, according to a source from the city’s municipal council, by two major characteristics: the ban on access to intermediaries, aimed at reducing sales prices , and the digitalization of its services.

This “model” market replaces the Akkari souk, whose income had been mortgaged to the Municipal Fund by the Rabat town hall. A question remains: how and when will this mortgage be lifted, and what project will replace the historic Akkari wholesale market?

The new complex includes several halls, refrigerated rooms, large parking lots as well as administrative offices. The structural works, started in 2023, were followed in mid-2024 by finishing works.

With this new infrastructure, supplemented by the modern slaughterhouses recently built in Sidi Bouknadel (south of Salé), the wilaya of Rabat consolidates its status as a leader in terms of urban and commercial infrastructure.
