Eric Jonckheere, emblematic figure in the fight against asbestos, has died

Eric Jonckheere, president of the Belgian Association of Asbestos Victims, has died at the age of 66.

Eric Jonckheere, president of the Belgian Association of Asbestos Victims (Abeva), died Friday at the age of 66, this association said on Sunday. The consequences of mesothelioma (cancer of the pulmonary pleura) took him away.

His illness was caused by exposure to asbestos during his youth near the Eternit factories in Kapelle-op-den-Bos (Flemish Brabant). Four other members of his family have already died from the same causes, Abeva explains in a press release.

Eric Jonckheere had been ill for several years. He continued “with particularly positive energy“the fight for asbestos victims.”Eric recently told us again that he was not driven by a feeling of revenge, but above all by the imperative need for justice, recognition of faults and fair reparation for the victims from those responsible for their illnesses“, according to Abeva. “This is the meaning of the legal actions he has taken, successfully so far.

Justice ruled last year that the Eternit company had committed an intentional error in the way its construction materials production factory was managed and that this error had harmed Eric Jonckheere.
