Saturday December 7, around 8:20 p.m., a witness informed the cantonal police headquarters that a serious accident had occurred on the A1 motorway between Ecublens and Morges-Est, towards Geneva.
According to initial information, a car occupied by a Swiss national stopped on the emergency lane, which had been closed to traffic for almost an hour (during periods of high density, the hard lane emergency is reassigned to traffic to improve traffic flow).
Shortly after this stop, for a reason that the investigation will have to determine, the driver of a second vehicle traveling on the emergency lane did not manage to avoid the collision and violently hit the rear of the first car, throwing it several dozen meters. Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, the occupant, a 28-year-old woman living in the canton of Geneva, died on the spot. As for the driver, a 19-year-old Swiss man, he was not injured.
-The duty prosecutor opened an investigation, entrusting the investigations to the specialist gendarmes of the Traffic Unit.
The highway towards Geneva was closed until 3:00 a.m. for the purposes of the investigation and the evacuation of vehicles. Traffic was diverted onto cantonal roads with the help of civil protection, according to pre-established plans (“DELESTA” plan).
