Iranian Narges Mohammadi, incarcerated since November 2021 and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner, was released from prison on Wednesday for three weeks on medical grounds, her defense announced on X.
“According to the opinion of the forensic doctor, the Tehran prosecutor's office suspended the execution of Narges Mohammadi's sentence for three weeks”reports her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, who specifies that the activist “was released from prison”.
Narges Mohammadi, 52, has been repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for twenty-five years for her commitment against the compulsory veil for women and against the death penalty. She spent much of the last decade in prison.

“The reason for his release is his physical condition after the removal of a tumor and a bone graft, carried out twenty-one days ago”explained Mostafa Nili. “The removed tumor was benign, but [Narges Mohammadi] must be examined every three months”according to his lawyer.
In June, the Iranian activist was sentenced to a new prison term of one year for “propaganda against the state”. She had refused to attend the hearing of her trial after unsuccessfully requesting that it be open to the public.
In March, the activist broadcast an audio message from her prison, in which she denounced a “full-scale war against women” in the Islamic Republic.
