The upcoming pension reform could shake up the finances of seniors. It is obvious that current inflation is not beneficial for older people. And although there are adjustments, it is not always in their favor!
The long-awaited pension reform
Inflation wreaks havoc on all social classes. For retired people, the effects are even more significant! The coming year should be no exception. The Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS) confirms the revaluation of pensions ! But this will not be done in the same way as in previous years!
Seniors will then benefit froman initial increase of 0.8%. An increase which will take place as usual on January 1, 2025. A new increase in pensions will then arrive on July 1. Over the year, this will therefore make a total increase of 1.6%.
Pension reform aims to preserve the purchasing power of seniors. However, it is not unanimous among seniors! In fact, she does not compensate for the inflation rate of 2.5%. Some believe this revaluation is lower compared to the needs of seniors! This can therefore impact their budget even more.
Concerns about health costs?
The revaluation of retirement pensions is not the only subject of debate for seniors! Indeed, there would be a possible 5% drop in reimbursements of Social Security. This particularly for consultations and medications! A measure that could once again impact the lives of seniors. Let us also remember that they regularly need care because of their condition.
Such a pension reform would therefore impact seniors in the wrong way! Indeed, this implies an increase in their spending in the long term. Some people might therefore decide not to always seek treatment. This further highlights the inequalities between healthy seniors and those with chronic illnesses.
Devices that spark debate on pensions
It is article 49.3 of the Constitution which could validate this pension reform. Thus, the device will not have to go through a parliamentary vote. This will allow it to come into force more quickly. But this situation can also provoke protests from the National Assembly.
This pension reform therefore receives mixed opinions. Indeed, the adjustment of pensions is not as satisfactory as seniors expected! And to this is added healthcare costs which continue to increase! Older people will therefore need to pay attention to the upcoming changes to better prepare themselves.
