Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday that the frantic arms race in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region could bring the world to the ”edge of the abyss”, or even towards ”a threat of nuclear war.
”As history reminds us, the vicious circle of the arms race and mistrust can bring the world to the edge of the abyss, even towards the threat of nuclear war,” declared the head of Turkish diplomacy , during the TRT 2024 Global Forum in Istanbul.
Stressing that the global system is simultaneously facing two conventional wars, both of which have global repercussions, Fidan said Turkey is “right at the center of these wars.”
”Stability in the Middle East, the South Caucasus and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the Black Sea is a primary objective for us,” he said.
Hakan Fidan observed that the international system faces political, military, economic and environmental challenges, stressing that humanity is going through a critical geopolitical period in response to these challenges.
The head of Turkish diplomacy pointed out the responsibility of the UN, an organization created to ensure the “maintenance of international peace and security”, which failed in its mission.
Referring to growing polarization that has become increasingly evident, Mr. Fidan said: ”This intensifies the search for new alliances and partnerships. As a result, the international security architecture is weakening, as you all know and witness.
”No order can last if it is not based on justice,” added Mr. Fidan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs further stressed the need to reform global communities in various areas, including political, economic and judicial.
Mr. Fidan argued that technopolitics affects the international balance, saying that artificial intelligence and cybersecurity systems also increase the perception of threats.
