Do you remember Jerko Tipuric? He arrived at Cercle de Bruges from Hajduk Split in 1989 and finally settled in our country. He now works as a bus driver and experienced an unusual situation yesterday.
Once his playing career ended at Beerschot in 1994, Jerko Tipuric (who now also has Belgian nationality) continued to coach in our country.
The 64-year-old managed Cercle de Bruges, Roeselare and Antwerp. In 2014, he returned to Groen en Zwart as assistant to Arnar Vidarsson and then to Dennis van Wijk.
Since then, he has become a bus driver. Yesterday morning, his De Lijn bus broke down right on a level crossing in Veldegem. Tipuric immediately understood the urgency of the situation and got everyone out, the bus was carrying quite a few students who were going to school.
On the verge of disaster
39 seconds after he got out of the vehicle, a train arrived and completely destroyed it. Fortunately, no one was inside anymore. The bus driver was praised for calmly and quickly getting everyone out. “He’s a hero,” one of the students told Nieuwsblad.
The mayor of Zedelgem, Annick Vermeulen, also reacted with a lot of emotion: “I thanked him. He reacted with a lot of composure. Thanks to him, a tragedy was avoided. “I can’t imagine this what would have happened if this bus was still full of children.”
