Roaming: and what is your solution?

Does it shock you to witness, helplessly, a new dismantling of encampments in Montreal? Does it touch you to see so many people on the streets as winter approaches? Does it worry or question you that a resource for people experiencing homelessness is opening near you?

In our city, as in many others, we are seeing an alarming increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness. And that’s without counting all the ones we don’t see. It is crucial that we act to remedy this situation before it becomes even more tragic.

It is in this context that the Office de consultation publique de Montréal (OCPM) is currently holding a public consultation on social cohabitation and homelessness, and we want to hear from you.

Let’s talk to each other and listen to each other

Homelessness is a delicate and emotional subject, sometimes polarizing. In his chronicle of The Press of November 20 on polarization, Alexandre Sirois cites the very apt recommendation of researcher Mathieu Lavigne: “What the literature shows is that simply talking to each other, listening to each other, paying attention to the concerns of others can also lead us to combat these false beliefs that we have in relation to other groups.”

We often forget to what extent public consultation processes, beyond the decisions that result from them, are privileged opportunities to encourage the rapprochement of different points of view. I can testify to this myself: what I have read and heard since this mandate was entrusted to me has changed my vision and my understanding of the issues. Imagine what it will be like when you too are heard.

Complex subject

Furthermore, the OCPM will work hard to report your concerns and proposals as faithfully as possible to the authorities concerned. But the weight of our recommendations also depends on you. The more your voices, the greater the influence of this approach.

Start by informing yourself. Homelessness is a complex subject that involves a multitude of stakeholders. The possible solutions must necessarily be based on a good understanding of the various facets of the problem.

Then, express yourself. We offer you various ways to share your thoughts. There is definitely one that will suit you.

Let us draw on the energy of our indignation, our fears and our compassion to take action and propose solutions. Let us seize the opportunity together for collective reflection on this alarming issue.
