(Ecofin Agency) – Camtel launched its mobile telephone service in 2020. The historic operator entered a market segment dominated by MTN and Orange. Viettel is also present on the market.
The Cameroonian public telecommunications company Camtel wants to rely on its competitors to extend the coverage of its mobile network. Gilbert Ngono, Director of Strategy, Organization, Projects and Innovation at Camtel, revealed in a recent interview with Developing Telecoms that the company signed a network sharing agreement with the telecoms operator Orange. In April 2022, the company had already signed a similar roaming agreement with MTN.
« We launched our mobile business not long ago. To reduce the coverage gap – while we deploy our infrastructure, which is a very investment-intensive activity – we are, in the meantime, signing roaming agreements with other operators ,” Mr. Ngono explained. “ As we roll out and grow our network, we will phase out the agreement in each area where we operate. “, he added.
Present on the market since the early 2000s, Orange and MTN have the largest network coverage in the country. This is explained in particular by the size of their respective subscriber bases. According to the latest available data (2021) from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ART), MTN has 10.5 million subscribers, compared to 8.7 million for Orange. The telecoms company Viettel comes in third place with 1.2 million subscribers. Camtel has 692,301 subscribers.
With the extension of its network, Camtel intends to strengthen its competitiveness in the growing mobile telephony market. According to Mr. Ngono, Camtel is targeting a market share of 10% within two years, compared to less than 5% currently. However, it should be noted that the date of entry into force of the agreement with Orange is not yet known.
