Morocco’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with African countries in the areas of nuclear and radiological safety and security were highlighted during the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications organized in Vienna .
Taking part in this Conference held from November 26 to 28 in the Austrian capital, the Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), Saïd Mouline, presented to the Director General of the International Nuclear and Radiological Agency Atomic Energy (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, the actions undertaken in terms of capacity building, carried out by the Agency for the benefit of the African continent, indicates Thursday a press release from the AMSSNuR.
A brochure detailing all the activities carried out by the AMSSNuR, as well as the perspectives aimed at expanding South-South African cooperation, advocated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, was distributed to all delegations visiting the “Stand Maroc”, indicates the press release.
This stand was prepared and hosted by the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (CNESTEN), in partnership with AMSSNuR, the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST), the National Institute of agricultural research (INRA), the National Food Safety Office (ONSSA) and the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah National Institute of Oncology (CHU).
During his visit to the stand, the Director General of the IAEA praised the exemplary partnership between Morocco and the IAEA, highlighting the contributions of our country in strategic sectors such as agriculture and health. He particularly highlighted Moroccan expertise as an essential lever for national and regional development in Africa.
The AMSSNuR signed during this conference a memorandum of understanding with the Senegalese Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Authority (ARSN), in the presence of the ambassadors of the two countries, the press release said, specifying that this agreement aims to share information between the two regulatory authorities and the promotion of African cooperation in nuclear and radiological safety and security.
AMSSNuR also took part in the “France–Morocco” workshop entitled “France Global Support for Infrastructure Development in the Fight Against Cancer”, during which the secretary general of AMSSNuR, Reda Nour, highlighted the missions of the African School in Radiation Safety, established in Morocco by the IAEA, to strengthen the regulatory infrastructure and the capacities of African authorities.
This African radiological safety school results from a practical arrangement signed between the AMSSNuR and the IAEA in 2023, which aims to strengthen the skills and capacities of radiological safety regulators in Africa in order to guarantee safe and secure use sources of ionizing radiation.
The presence of AMSSNuR at this international event, alongside members of the national delegation led by the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco to international organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, testifies to its constant commitment to facilitating the effective deployment of applications nuclear, particularly in the medical field and in agriculture, while being strict and rigorous in monitoring the protection of the public, patients, workers, and the environment against the risks linked to ionizing radiation, concludes the press release.
