New offensive from Nintendo against Switch pirates

Nintendo is far from done with everyone who tinkers and hacks their Switch. The manufacturer is now seeking information from Reddit and platforms to identify new pirates… and increase complaints.

A few weeks (hopefully!) from the presentation of its future console, Nintendo wants to clear the way and is stepping up its sweeps in the world of Switch emulators and hacks that allow you to hack the console. The company is now seeking to obtain the green light from the American courts to subpoena several hosts and online platforms, including GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Github, Discord, Google and even Reddit.

Rain of complaints to come

The US branch of Nintendo (NOA) informed the Washington State court that it had discovered “ online actors who appear to play a role in Pirate Shops », online stores that sell and distribute pirated Switch games. The Japanese manufacturer has been investigating James Williams, known in the industry as “Archbox”, for several months, a specialist in Switch hacks and alleged seller of these illegal copies of games. He is the subject of a formal complaint filed last June.

During this investigation, NOA determined that the famous Archbox was the main moderator of SwitchPirates, a subreddit dedicated to Switch hacking; a discussion space which has 190,000 members. “ Nintendo believes that other active accounts in the SwitchPirates community may also have been managed by the defendant or by people who worked with him », explains the company in its request relayed by GameFile.

Nintendo is therefore seeking to put names to these people, but the company needs information from Reddit and other platforms. Which will subsequently give him the weapons to file complaints against these same individuals. It is very clear that Nintendo has launched a real offensive against pirates in order to dissuade anyone who would like to take too close an interest in the innards of the Switch 2…
