The Geneva administrative mediation office must cease its activities, leaving dozens of requests in the lurch

In a press release released on Friday, the first cantonal administrative mediator spoke of “the bitterness induced by this exceptional situation”. Elected in 2018, Edouard Sabot was the only candidate selected for this position, but he did not obtain enough votes in the Grand Council last week to be elected.

With its mandate ending on November 30, the administrative mediation office finds itself without a designated successor. It must therefore stop its activities until the appointment of a new administrative mediator. This situation deprives those administered of a service required by the Geneva Constitution and leaves the BMA executive assistant in an uncertain professional situation, notes Mr. Sabot.

Several debates at the Grand Council

“To date, no official reaction from the authorities has taken place,” he laments in the press release. The BMA is an independent entity whose aim is to resolve disputes between the administration and citizens. In 2023, it was requested 415 times, including 183 requests for mediation and 232 directions and requests for information.

The BMA has been the subject of several debates at the Grand Council in recent years. MPs criticized him for offering “social advice” while deviating from legal objectives. It was the subject of a report by the Court of Auditors in June 2023, which recommended clearly redefining its missions.
