Italy promises to help Switzerland reach an agreement with the EU

Italy wants to help Switzerland quickly reach an agreement with the EU, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday during the dialogue forum between the two countries in Rome. In the best case scenario, the new year will be celebrated with a signed agreement.

The Italian Foreign Minister described relations between Italy and Switzerland as “excellent” and highlighted the “personal bond” with his counterpart in Bern, Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis.

In bilateral relations, there is “a positive dialogue on the issue of cross-border workers”. And for the future, the two countries want to expand their cooperation to strengthen ties in many sectors, such as biotechnology, innovation and energy.

With Italian Speaking Day, Italy wants to build a bridge of peace and dialogue, explained Antonio Tajani. In this context, Ignazio Cassis stressed the importance of a second peace conference on Ukraine involving Russia, which he considers essential for a lasting agreement. Rome will host a new peace conference in July next year.

The Italian foreign minister also expressed hope that a ceasefire could be reached by then. Ignazio Cassis likened the planned reconstruction efforts to a possible new “Marshall Plan” and expressed optimism that it would provide a significant recovery for the war-scarred country.
