Alcohol and drugs behind the wheel: SQ holiday roadside checks begin this week

Sûreté du Québec (SQ) agents will begin increasing road checks on Friday in order to tackle drugs and drunk driving during the holiday season.

This measure, announced in a press release on Thursday, will be deployed on November 29 and will last until January 2 and will involve all police services in Quebec.

The provincial police force will also hold a national day of road safety operations on December 12 to combat impaired driving. He will also check the winter tires.

The SAAQ will also hold its holiday awareness campaign from December 2 to 19.

The latter, which will have the theme “There are plenty of good reasons to be a designated driver”, will aim to raise motorists’ awareness of the importance of not driving when they are impaired by alcohol, in addition to promote the role of designated drivers.

Alcohol was the cause of 25% of collisions and 15% of fatal accidents recorded between 2018 and 2022.

Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs still remains one of the main causes of death on Quebec roads.
