Climate experts have sent an open letter to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change calling for an overhaul of the COPs.
-
One idea would be to exclude fossil fuel producers from the list of potential conference host countries.
-
Other suggestions include reducing the number of participants and reviewing the consensus decision-making method.
COP29, a COP for nothing? The last UN climate conference, which was held in Baku in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 23, concluded with very little progress. Certainly, the States managed to agree on a new financial objective to help the countries of the South, but the figure is considered unambitious. On reducing greenhouse gas emissions, almost no progress has been made.
Worse, the conference host country was singled out for its support of fossil fuels and its disastrous human rights record. Enough to question the meaning of international climate conferences, major gatherings bringing together tens of thousands of participants each year, with a carbon impact to spare. In almost thirty years of existence, they have not been able to curb overall greenhouse gas emissions, which have increased again this year.
