The Director General of the Development Cooperation Office (ODCO), Aicha Errifaai, pleaded, Wednesday in New Delhi, for strengthening intergenerational connections in order to ensure the sustainability of the cooperative model.
Speaking during a panel under the theme “Bringing our cooperative identity to life”, organized as part of the World Cooperatives Conference 2024, Ms. Errifaai highlighted the numerous threats weighing on cooperatives, emphasizing in particular the “lag generational”, which she considers to be the main obstacle to the transmission of values.
The limited engagement of young people in the cooperative sector constitutes a major risk for the continuity of this movement, she considered, calling for promoting the creation of cooperatives by young people and guaranteeing the transmission of founding values as well as sustainability. of this socio-economic model. Ms Errifaai also addressed other major challenges facing the sector, including “the priority given to profitability”, which pushes some cooperatives to adopt practices similar to those of traditional businesses, often to the detriment of cooperative values.
