An agreement on the financing of Social Security finally reached, after a long standoff

Long and lively. For seven hours, Wednesday afternoon and evening in the Assembly, the seven deputies and seven senators making up the joint committee reviewed all the articles of the social security financing law. With the aim of sealing an agreement – for supporters of the text – or rejecting it – for opponents of the government.

A muscular standoff and lively exchanges, but in the end the eight elected officials of the common base (LR, Ensemble pour la République, Horizons, UDI) won the bet around 9:30 p.m. Although very critical, Gabriel Attal had it validated the copy of the executive, despite a dispute over rising labor costs. The socialists, who had carried out “constructive proposals” in exchange for compensation, were not listened to, deplores Jérôme Guedj.

The socialists in Matignon

This compromise (which no longer includes the seven hours of free work), or even another version, will be submitted to deputies on December 2. Michel Barnier should then draw 49-3, in order to have his bill adopted without a vote. In the process, the left will respond with a motion of censure. This could be examined on December 4. In the event of rejection, the Social Security text will be ratified. If approved, the government will be overthrown.

At the time the commission was working, the socialists Patrick Kanner and Boris Vallaud were in Matignon. An hour of discussions with the Prime Minister… which ended in an impasse. A few hours earlier, during a lunch with deputies from his camp, the head of state urged them to prevent censorship by calling on the PS to be responsible. Wasted effort: Wednesday evening, the national office of the Socialist Party decided to vote for censure.
