Discussions between Morocco and Airbus Helicopters regarding a potential order for H225M (Caracal) helicopters are continuing. Although no agreement has yet been reached, negotiations are progressing and an outcome is expected in 2025.
According to the French media The Tribune, Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Moroccofrom October 28 to 30, 2024, could have constituted an opportunity to speed up the negotiations. However, this was not the case. “Rabat apparently did not like having its arm twisted by Paris for this deal,” explains the economic-sounding media. Despite the presence of Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, in the French delegation, no contract could be finalized, neither during this visit, nor at the Marrakech Air Show, organized from October 30 to November 2.

Negotiations are nevertheless continuing actively between Airbus Helicopters and the Moroccan authorities. La Tribune specifies that there is talk of a firm order for around ten helicopters, with an option for other devices. Discussions currently focus on “helicopter configuration, prices and conditions”, with a final decision expected in 2025.
A potential maintenance hub in Morocco
In addition to the sale of the Caracals, Airbus Helicopters would also consider developing a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub in Morocco, intended to cover the needs of West Africa. This installation would strengthen industrial cooperation between the manufacturer and the Kingdom, while positioning Morocco as a strategic player in aeronautical maintenance on the continent.

For Airbus Helicopters, this contract is of particular importance. “This future order, if it materializes, will make it possible to fill a two-year production gap in the H225 chain,” underlines La Tribune. The Marignane factory (Bouches-du-Rhône), where the helicopter is manufactured, must face a recent drop in demand for this model.
A decision expected for 2025
The Caracals, known for their carrying capacity of 11 tonnes, are already used by several countries, such as Iraq (14 aircraft), the Netherlands (12) and the Japanese coast guard (3). Airbus Helicopters, which must produce between 25 and 30 H225Ms each year, hopes that this Moroccan contract will complement current orders and those expected from the United Arab Emirates.

The outcome of discussions between Morocco and Airbus Helicopters will be closely followed, both by the aeronautical industry and by sector analysts. If successful, this contract could strengthen the operational capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces while consolidating the Kingdom’s role in the regional aeronautical ecosystem.
