“Türkiye is ready to contribute to stopping the massacre in Gaza and establishing a ceasefire”

AA / Ankara / Serdar Dincel

The President of the Republic of Turkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressed his country’s desire to contribute by all means to stopping the ongoing massacre in Gaza and establishing a lasting ceasefire.

The Turkish Head of State spoke on Wednesday at the meeting of the AK Party parliamentary group.

He first reacted to the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

“We welcome the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which entered into force this morning,” he first shared.

Before adding: “We expect all parties, in particular Israel, to fulfill their responsibilities to the letter in order to maintain calm on the ground.”

Furthermore, Erdogan recalled the urgency of reaching an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza as quickly as possible.

“As Türkiye, we are ready to contribute by all means to stopping the massacre in Gaza and establishing a permanent ceasefire,” he defended.

For the Turkish president, “Türkiye strengthens day after day its role as one of the main poles of world politics”.

In a statement Tuesday evening, US President Joe Biden indicated that the United States would “make another attempt” to negotiate a truce in the Gaza Strip. He specified that this initiative would be carried out with the support of Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar and Israel, “in the days to come”.

This declaration follows the historic agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon on Tuesday evening, which puts an end to several months of Israeli bombings which left nearly 4,000 dead on the Lebanese side. For Biden, this example of international mediation could pave the way for similar efforts for Gaza, where the human toll and destruction caused by Israeli bombings are even heavier.

The truce between Israel and Lebanon, negotiated through the diplomatic efforts of the United States and , came into effect at 4 a.m. local time (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

Last October, Hezbollah launched a series of ballistic missile, rocket and drone attacks against Israel in order to show solidarity with the people of Gaza and to pressure Israel for a ceasefire in the besieged coastal enclave.

As the cross-border war continued, Israel launched massive airstrikes across the small Mediterranean country in late September against what it said were Hezbollah targets. A ground invasion was launched on October 1.
