The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) is issuing a philatelic sheet of six stamps on November 26 for World Sustainable Transport Day.
Every year on this date, the United Nations recognizes the crucial role of safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, in supporting sustainable economic growth, improving the social well-being of populations and strengthening international cooperation and trade between countries.
The year 2024 also marks the sixtieth anniversary of the world’s first high-speed train. On October 1, 1964, the Tokaido Shinkansen, commonly known as the “bullet train,” was launched between Tokyo and Osaka, just before the Tokyo Olympics.
Whether for work or pleasure, the choices we make to move from one place to another – by car, plane, ferry, bicycle, scooter or public transport – can have a significant impact on carbon emissions. Making informed lifestyle choices around transportation can help us reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
By fostering an inclusive and sustainable transportation system, we can facilitate social and economic development, mitigate environmental damage and improve the overall quality of life.
The six stamps represent:
- 73¢ JR Shinkansen – Japan, “approved by the Japan Central Railway Company”;
- $1.65 Amtrak Acela – United States
- CHF 1.20 ONCF Al Boraq – Morocco
- CHF 1,90 CR Fuxing – Chine
- €0.95 SNCF Voyageurs TGV INOUI – France
- €1,20 DB ICE – Allemagne
The stamps are illustrated by Tom Connell (United Kingdom).
