Violent demonstration in Montreal: “thugs” must be punished, says Legault

The Prime Minister asked Mayor Valérie Plante to “restore order” as quickly as possible in her city.

“I told him that it is urgent, in the coming days, that we arrest the thugs, the thugs who were violent on Friday,” he warned on Tuesday. There must be a very clear message sent to these thugs that they will be punished, that they will be arrested, that there will be consequences for what they have done.”

François Legault recalled that it is up to the City of Montreal and its police department to ensure the maintenance of public order.

For the moment, the government still has confidence in the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), but it wants action in the short term. “I expect, in the coming days, that there will be many more than three arrests,” he insisted, in a press scrum at the National Assembly.

The Prime Minister offers to Valérie Plante to send the Sûreté du Québec as reinforcements, if necessary.

Remember that a demonstration against Canada’s participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) degenerated last Friday evening in the city’s downtown core. Vehicles were set on fire, windows were broken and police officers were attacked.
