“I especially can’t wait to take down my tree!”: here’s why Kad Merad no longer celebrates Christmas ‘like before’

“He’s Belgian”: Netflix’s blunder after the release of Stromae’s new song

Are you Christmas movie fans?

Kad Merad: “There are different styles of Christmas movies. There’s the cute, charming Christmas movie, where everything goes well, it tickles and everything. And, there are the Gremlins, Mom, I missed the plane and other comedies where things go more smoothly. I’m more interested in the latter. There is also a great classic of American cinema called It’s a Wonderful Life by Frank Capra which is the ultimate Christmas film in my opinion.”

Do you like to celebrate Christmas?

Kad Merad: “Not really. Our children are grown up now so we don’t celebrate Christmas like we used to. Christmas is above all a time for children. When we become grandparents, I hope to rediscover this desire for the magic of Christmas. But, for the moment, I’m decorating the house because I tell myself that there is a friend who will come by with his kid. Otherwise, I can’t wait for it to pass and take down my tree!”

Valérie, are you as picky as Nathalie, your character, when you receive guests for Christmas?

Valérie Bonneton: “It’s true that when I entertain, I don’t do things by halves. But, in fact, the character of Nathalie is a bit like her creator, Alexandra (Leclère, Editor’s note). I’m starting to know her a little and she is a person who is always in control and who is very manic. His perfectionism can also give rise to anxiety.”

Was there a scene where you had trouble keeping a straight face while filming?

Valérie Bonneton: “People often think that when you make comedies, you die laughing. This is not the case. We work intensely. Especially since for this film, we only had 35 days of shooting. So you had to be focused. And Alexandra Leclère, she is on the line from morning until evening. She’s all in, she’s very invested. And she’s still in good shape. So, we must follow. You always have to be in shape, like her. So, we’re not really here to have fun but to work to make others laugh.”

Kad Merad, we can currently find you in Finally, a film by Claude Lelouch. Is it true that you approached the director’s wife, Valérie Perrin, on a train to tell her that you wanted to work with her husband?

“That’s exactly it. The lesson learned from that is that you have to have the nerve to tell people that you love them or that you want to work with them. If I had never been talking to him, I wouldn’t be in this movie today. So I was right to do it.”
