Rabat – The Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, indicated, Monday, that an investment of 1.88 billion dirham has been allocated to projects, planned for the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 in several cities in the Kingdom, within the framework of the national household waste recovery program.
In response to an oral question on “the ministry’s strategy to improve waste management”, during the oral questions session in the House of Representatives, Mr. Laftit specified that these projects concern the cities of Kenitra, Agadir, Tangier , Sefrou, the local authority of Ouarzazate, Al Hoceima, Ouezzane, Moulay Abdellah, Béni Mellal, and the group of communes of Ouardigha and Laâyoune.
As for the Médiouna landfill, the minister indicated that the rate of progress of the rehabilitation and closure works has reached around 40%, with a budget of 233 million DH allocated to this project.
Regarding the project for the landfill and recovery center for household waste in the prefectures of Casablanca and the province of Nouaceur and Médiouna, Mr. Laftit affirmed that the results of the call for tenders will soon be announced, noting that this project benefits from financial support estimated at 2.03 billion DH, in addition to the contribution of the Casablanca-Settat region to the tune of 272 million DH.
In this sense, he recalled that the Ministry of the Interior has developed the national program for the recovery of household waste 2023-2034 in order to capitalize on the achievements made and achieve the expected objectives, noting that the main axes of this program concerns the creation of landfill and recovery centers for household waste in 50 provincial centers.
They also include the implementation of rehabilitation and closure projects for old landfills (around 233 landfills) and the acquisition of equipment to improve the management of sanitation services at the level of local authorities adopting self-management.
These areas also include the implementation of projects aimed at the professional collection and cleaning of household waste in order to achieve a rate of 100%, in addition to technical assistance for local authorities with a view to carrying out specific projects. , strengthen capacities, and put in place monitoring and control mechanisms.
The overall volume of planned investments amounts to 21.14 billion DH, including 9.7 billion for the construction of landfill and recovery centers for household waste, 695 million DH for the rehabilitation of old landfills, 1.2 billion DH for the acquisition of equipment to improve the management of sanitation services, 9.5 billion DH for household waste collection and cleaning projects, and 60 million DH for technical assistance to local authorities.
The contribution from the general state budget to this program amounts to around 400 million DH per year, while that of the Ministry of the Interior is 450 million DH per year, the minister said.
