Guzzo Cinemas | Watch a movie in the fridge

Several branches of Cinémas Guzzo seem to have heating problems. These observations come at a time when business is going badly for the cinema chain, which a judge has just ordered placed under interim receivership.

The Press was able to notice that the temperature was abnormally cold on Saturday in a room at the Méga-Plex Sphèretech, in the borough of Saint-Laurent, in Montreal.

Two weeks earlier, The Press observed a similar situation at the Méga-Plex Taschereau on the South Shore.

Some Internet users testified on a discussion forum hosted on the Reddit site that they had a similar experience last weekend. One of them even shared a photo of a poster that would have been stuck on the door of a room, indicating “no heating in our rooms”, with a sentence in English specifying that the heating was “ out of order.”

“First time watching a movie at the cinema with my coat on [et] my hat,” writes the person behind the anonymous publication, mentioning that the story took place at the Méga-Plex Lacordaire, in the borough of Saint-Léonard, in Montreal.

Joined by The PressVincent Guzzo, CEO of the cinemas of the same name, did not wish to comment on the matter.

Remember that the Superior Court of Quebec ordered earlier this month the Quebec movie mogul to open his books to the Raymond Chabot firm.

The interim receivership comes as CIBC is demanding more than $38 million from Cinémas Guzzo.

This case also concerns public funds. In court on November 15, Quebec mentioned that Guzzo owed it 6.7 million, and Ottawa for its part claimed 1.4 million. These amounts include unremitted taxes, but above all “withholding taxes” on employee pay.
