Major police operation in Grange-Canal

An explosion occurred this afternoon in Grange-Canal. A child was slightly injured. The police suspect the presence of a parcel bomb in a mailbox.

“I thought you only saw these scenes in movies, there are so many police cars.” At the entrance to Chemin de la Petite-Boissière, two residents are waiting to go home. The area is cordoned off and a major operation involving the cantonal police and the Geneva Fire and Rescue Service (SIS) is underway.

According to the 20 Minutes newspaperthe police suspect a suspicious package placed in one of the mailboxes at number 36 and which exploded around 4:15 p.m. A version corroborated by testimonies collected on site which claim that a noise was heard in the entrance hall. A child in the building was reportedly injured and taken by ambulance.

The window at the entrance to the building exploded and some mailboxes melted, residents say.

Still according to 20 minutes, While the buildings at numbers 32 and 34 have been evacuated, the residents of number 36 who were at home at the time of the incident can no longer go out or touch their mailboxes. The others are waiting to be able to return to their homes.

At this time, the police are making no comment.
