Without the security guard’s intervention that day, the Mazan rape case would probably never have been revealed. Our colleagues at Paris-Match released this Friday, September 13, a video from Dominique Pelicot’s phone, captured on September 12, 2020, the day he was arrested for filming under the skirts of several women, in a supermarket in Carpentras (Vaucluse).
In these shocking images, we can see the alleged predator, today accused of having organized the repeated rapes of his wife Gisèle, wandering through the aisles of the store, looking for “prey” to spy. His modus operandi seems well-established: he first spots women in skirts or dresses, then hides his mobile phone, camera on, in a bag that he carries at arm’s length. He then discreetly approaches his victims and slips his bag under their clothing for a few seconds before leaving.
“That makes four clients.”
In this video, Dominique Pelicot manages to film a customer’s underwear twice… before being interrupted by a security guard, who had noticed the sixty-year-old’s little antics and was waiting for a flagrant offence to intervene. “Your phone takes good pictures!”the security guard exclaims first, before addressing the victim. “He was filming under your dress!”. “No, no, no…”the customer first gasps, taken aback. “Yes, yes, yes! Are you filing a complaint? He was filming your phone under your dress like that, just now.” In the talkie-walkie From the security guard, we hear one of his colleagues say: “That makes four clients.”
“It’s true?”, asks the victim, who does not want to believe it. “Am I here to laugh? We follow him on camera,” retorts the security guard, before declaring: “Madam, I am counting on you to file a complaint.” He then addresses Dominique Pelicot: “Come on, the police, straight away! And the other customers? We should have found them, there are three others.” He continues, in the same tense tone: “You’re a big scumbag, aren’t you? You’re lucky, I swear it’s my mother, I’ll rip your head off.” Shortly after, Dominique Pelicot was arrested by the police. The video on his phone could not have been deleted by the person concerned, since the device was immediately seized by the security guard.
Decade of Rape
This arrest allowed the police to analyze his phone and carry out searches. By searching Dominique Pelicot’s computer, investigators discovered the decade of rapes, photographed, filmed, captioned and archived, that his wife Gisèle suffered.
Alongside Dominique Pelicot, 50 men, aged 26 to 74, are currently on trial in Avignon, most of them charged with aggravated rape, for which they face 20 years of criminal imprisonment. Eighteen of these accused, including Dominique Pelicot, are appearing in custody. Thirty-two others are appearing free, the last one, on the run, being tried in his absence. The trial of the Mazan rapes has however been suspended until Monday, pending the return of Dominique Pelicot, who is ill.
